I heard someone once say that a woman's monthly cycle is like the seasons of the earth and that was eye opening to me. I realized that I was trying to do all the wrong things at the wrong times of my cycle and not prioritizing certain projects but rather starting a bunch of things that never got finished. Once I realized that my body has a flow of energy that rises and falls at varying parts of my cycle, I began to understand how to properly channel my energy to get the most done and be the most efficient with my days and routines. Going into this new year I'm going to make it a goal work with my body and cycle in the coming year rather than against it to be more successful and feel accomplished and I hope this post can help you do that too.
Phase 1: Menstruation -> Winter
This is your monthly period, this is a time of reset, resting and relaxing. This is a good time to journal and set your goals and plans for the next month. Focus this week on relaxing, take a bath, read that book you've been wanting to and just refresh your soul. This is also a good time to educate yourself on strategies and methods to improve your homemaking skills. Listen to. Podcast about homemaking, motherhood, or marriage. Read blog posts and books on these things to learn how to care for these areas of your life best. This would also be a good time to make a monthly meal plan and your grocery shopping list. Don't try to do a lot of physical exercise or big projects you will likely not have enough energy or motivation to successfully finish them and lose steam on it and move on. This time will be good to prepare for the next phases, so you know what you want to channel your energy on and not waste that time bouncing around from project to project.
Phase 2: Follicular -> Spring
This phase gets its name from the human Follicular hormone that rises to form the follicle that holds your monthly egg in preparation for ovulation. This is a time of renewed energy from a rose in Estrogen levels, this is where you will want to get out and hang out with friends and be more social. Schedule a special date with your husband, or a play date with your mom friend, brainstorm home renovations and solve some problems. This is also a good time of your cycle to deep clean an area of your home or do your big shop this week and meal prepping for the month.
Phase 3: Ovulatory -> Summer
This phase you will have your peak energy (and libido 😉). This is a really good time to, if you haven't already in the last phase, start those projects you've been brainstorming and get them done. Refinish that piece of furniture, sew or hem those clothes or curtains, redecorate for the season, meal prep or deep clean. Get those projects done now with your energy high. This is also a really great time to invest in your marriage through dates and time together and your kids through play dates or get out and meet some friends yourself.
Phase 4: Luteal -> Autumn
In this phase your Estrogen and testosterone start to fall, and progesterone starts to rise. Progesterone is an anti-anxiety hormone, so this is a good time to do some of those tedious projects like organizing your pantry or linen closet or switching over out of season clothes that are the size too small for your children. You should also begin slowing down and prioritizing rest because your menstruation is coming again soon. Don't be staying up late making breakfast sandwiches for the freezer, get to bed early or at least on time.
I plan to be thinking about and being more aware of these phases of my cycle in the future to get the most out of my body rather than running it ragged all the time and I hope you are able to do that too and that this post helps you understand better how you can do that.
